Arrive early for your tee time. If you are late, that can mess up the golf courses entire schedule for the day.

When teeing off, usually the person in your foursome with the lowest score on the previous hole tees off first.

On fairways, and the rough, usually the person whose ball is farthest from the pin hits first.

When around the putting green, again the person farthest from the pin goes first; but everyone will usually hit their ball onto the green before anyone starts putting.

Again, once everyone is on the green, the person who is farthest from the hole putts first.

It is considered rude to step on someone's line (the line between their ball and the hole).

If someone has a far putt, it is courteous to ask if they would like the flag tended or taken out.

Remember if the ball goes in the hole when the flag is still in, technically the golfer technically incurs a two stroke penalty, so be sure to remove the flag before holing out.

Remember to put the flag back in the hole sometimes. You don't have to do it every time, but don't always expect someone else to pick it up.

Mark your ball on the putting green, especially if it's in someone's line to the pin. If you don't have a marker, a coin will do just fine.

Don't forget to repair your ball marks and divots!

If you are playing exceptionally slow, and there are groups waiting behind you, consider letting them play through. It would probably be best to pick up the pace, and start picking up your ball when you have an excessive number of strokes.

Don't talk when someone else is hitting. Try to stand behind others when they are teeing off. Also, if your shadow is in someone's putting line, you should move; that can be distracting.

Don't hit until you are 100 percent sure the group in front of you is out of the way.

Like it or not, last year the Apple iPhone got a lot of attention. The mass media hype was fervent with store employees whooping and cheering customers who had queued up for days prior to the "Jesus phone's" launch. This amount of interest was warranted since despite its shortcomings (lack of 3G, high price, no picture messaging) the iPhone won praise over its new and revolutionary interface, a technology called Multi-touch which acts like an advanced touch screen where you can pinch the screen with two fingers to move a photo around for instance.

To say the iPhone blew away the competition in the mobile phone market is a bit of an understatement, in the months since its release there have been many phones that have borrowed features, from the general shape to little thing such as an accelerometer which can detect whether the device is being held in portrait or landscape. Defeating Painful Symptoms of Trigger Thumb

Trigger thumb is a common repetitive strain injury that can cause significant impairment in hand strength, dexterity, and daily functioning. The condition is characterized by pain, catching or "locking" of the thumb, and can result in difficulty performing everyday tasks. Although there are many organic causes of trigger thumb, environmental factors (e.g., workplace conditions, repetitive tasks and job demands) usually play a significant role.

Trigger Thumb, or stenosing tenosynovitis, as it is known in the medical world, is the result of acute trauma causing micro-tears or a chronic overuse injury involving the flexor tendon that runs through the thumb. Specifically, the flexor pollicis longus tendon develops nodules or adhesions on it, which in turn leads to increased friction as the tendon passes through the pulley system, resulting in the irritation and swelling of the tendon and the associated nodules on the tendon. This inflammation and irritation increases the size of the nodules or adhesions, causing the dysfunction to greatly increase as the thumb is flexed over and over. Essentially, the nodule or adhesion on the affected tendon in the thumb gets trapped as it passes through the pulley system as the thumb is flexed but the thumb cannot return via extension in the same smooth manner due to the adhesion or nodule getting stuck or "catching" as it tries to pass back through the pulley system. Because of this, the thumb tends to lock down into the palm of the hand as well as produces painful catching or clicking that is commonly associated with Trigger Thumb.

Trigger Thumb is a more common injury in women than men, and it is more often noticed in people that are suffering from chronic illnesses. Rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, for example, are common correlates of Trigger Thumb. The reason for this seems to be caused by the speed in which people heal from injury, and people with chronic disorders like diabetes and arthritis tend to heal at a much slower rate. However, movement also plays a significant role in the manifestation of the malady. Repetitive movements and increased tension, stress and strain on the hands through heavy lifting, typing, and long hours at a steering wheel can lead to Trigger Thumb as well.

There are numerous treatment options for reducing the pain and impairment associated with thumb and finger triggering. Often rest and over-the-counter medications are enough to bring temporary relief and possibly reduce the rate of onset due to reduced irritation and swelling of the tissues. Individuals looking for long-term treatment for Trigger Thumb, however, are advised to consider appropriate stretches and exercises that promote the integrity of the muscles and tendons in the hand and forearm. Stretches that help thin and lengthen the affected tendon and exercises that increase circulation and break down the developing adhesions and nodules, most often formed from scar tissue, are very important. Although surgery is the most used method of treatment, it is far from effective. Non-invasive exercises promoting the stretching of the flexor tendons and strengthening the extensor tendons shows great promise in preventing and treating this disorder.

Of course the world has gone wireless. It's hard to miss walking down the street. Phones are the most obvious as are pictures when something embarrassing happens. Wireless printers, however, have been a bit on the slow side in keeping pace. They have been available but in many cases they were just too expensive or require an advanced degree to install.

What to look for

From Lexmark to Canon, just about all printer manufacturers have a wireless printer line in one form or another. How the manufacturer decides to go about developing its offerings is the key to many aspects of deciding which wireless photo printer is right for you. The two big things to watch or are; does the photo printer have its wireless capability built in or is it optional.

What's available?

The Canon Selphy ES1 is a solid wireless photo printer unit. Like just about all wireless photo printers it does come with issues that are easily accepted. The Canons' issue is a slow operating system. This is a small issue by any comparison considering what consumers expect these days; it's never fast enough.

Lexmark has offered two new wireless printers with built-in wireless technology in 2007. The Lexmark Z1420 and Lexmark X45450 offer 802.1 b/g wireless technologies. If printing from a memory card, however, you will need a USB. A 5x7 borderless photo will need some software as well. Each is a multi-function unit so price it a little more. If a dedicated photo printer is an option check out the Lexmark Z1420. It's adequate for the job, doesn't need a doctorate to install and turns out reasonable photos for under $80.00.

Brother is also in on the act with its Brother MFC Series. A bit pricy but an all-in-one wireless printer ready for the job. Be careful that you have the right media card.

Bluetooth options should be mentioned. They are most often found with Canon and are increasing option with manufacturers. Wireless photo printers have come a long way but be sure you know what is inside before you buy.

If you use a resolution other than the native resolution the monitor will have stretch, and shrink the image to fit the specified resolution which results in quality and detail loss. The native resolution offers the best image quality over all other resolutions. Good native monitor resolutions include 1920x1080 (1080p HD), 1280x720 (720p HD), and 1680x1050.

Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio is the range between brightest and darkest on the computer monitor. The higher the contrast ratio the better. If a monitor has a high contrast ratio it has a greater range of shades, enhanced detail, and greater image depth.

Response Time: This is important especially for gaming and movies, this is the amount of time it takes for the monitor to refresh, the lower the response time the better. If your monitor's response time is low, or you have an older LCD computer monitor, you've probably experienced some ghosting, ghosting is where the images end up sort of being mashed together between frames. You'll see what's left over of the previous frame in the current frame, and can get irritating if it happens often.

Brightness: The brightness is emitted light power over a specific area on the monitor, the higher the brightness the better. Most monitors have over 200 cd/m2 which is sufficient for normal use.

Connectivity: Connectivity is important, because it will determine how your monitor is going to connect to your computer, most newer monitors have DVI connectivity, while older LCD monitors will have VGA port connectivity. If you happen to have a VGA monitor you can get an adapter that will convert it to DVI so you can plug your monitor into your computer.

How To Speed Up Your Computer The Easy Way

I have seen many computers, especially older ones that take a long time to boot up and are also very slow on the internet. I devised a list of things you can do to "fix" computers that lag. I've "fixed" many computers this way and people were amazed so I will share it with you.

1. Click a blank spot on your computer, and go to properties. From there you can minimize the video acceleration and resolution settings. Use a minimal setting that you are comfortable with and you will see amazing results.

2. Clean up your desk top by putting all icons in a single folder and date it by renaming the folder.

3. Clear your cookies, the temporary internet files,etc. Also clear your recent documents. You should be careful about clearing the passwords and log in information on your browser.

4. Minimize your start up folder, this will cause your computer to boot up faster.

5. Get rid of any large video files (over 1 giga bytes, for example)

Get rid of any files or folders that you don't need.

Get rid of any programs that you don't need. ( Make sure you have a back up on a cd or dvd, because once you uninstall a program, it's gone.)

6. Do a disk clean up. You do this by going to My Computer and clicking on the properties button. You will see the disk cleanup button there.

7. Use a registry cleaner with extreme caution. The idea is to get rid of all unused registry values but if you remove too many of them, some of the programs will not run.

8. Use anti spyware and anti virus software to run a scan and delete any unwanted virus or spyware.

9. You can also use "utilities programs" to clean out your computer and make it go faster.

The whole idea is to reduce your cpu usage and enable faster access to our files by reducing the over all load on your computer. By following the nine steps above your computer will run simpler and thus faster. (Note: when you get rid of files or programs, make sure you have a back up on a CD or DVD so that you can "put them back" in case you change your mind later.)

Here's another trick you can use if you find that the fonts on your web pages are too small and hard to read. You can change the font settings on the desk top to large fonts, or simpler yet, use the CTRL button on the keyboard with the scroll button on your mouse to "zoom in" on the webpage and make the font size appear larger.

Studies have shown that, on average, a company replacing monochrome laser printers with color laser multi-function printers (MFPs) that do not enforce printing policies and will use 10 times the projected toner in value.

There is, however, a way for an enterprise to provide its employees with higher quality print output and finishing capabilities without adding a large bill at the end of the year. If you read your pay per page contract carefully, strip out the paying for unused pages, at least the paper part, and consider making use of a document output management system, you can afford as many MFPs your company needs in the most cost effective way.

Before committing to any pay-per-page contract, assess what printing assets you have and what the cost of your current operation really is to discover what you need with an independent output management system. Keep in mind that part of a good output management system is that it can be used with any industry standard copy and printing device.

Enforcing policies that allow only certain users to make use of the color capabilities, for instance, are very effective and can be easily implemented using an output management system that requires user authentication. A typical one is Xerox paper and color toner being dumped in your yard whether you need it or not followed by the second classic, a huge bill for overuse of toner due to higher coverage. So much for saving the rain forests and reducing the carbon footprint.

I am not saying there is no place for pay-per-page, merely that if pay-per-page printing is thought to be the easy option, it could also be an expensive option too, if selected for the wrong reasons. Also, that an independent output management system makes extreme sense no matter if you own your printers or contracted into a pay-per-page scheme.

What To Do When the Computer Freezes

You are watching a video on your computer and running a few programs in the background. All of a sudden the video freezes or slows down. What do you do?

When this happened to one guy, he turned off his computer. When he turned it back on, it would not work properly. Even after using a restore program, it still would not work. Since one of my programs was running in the background, he blamed it on my program. The real problem was that he reacted incorrectly.

1) The first thing that you should do when the computer freezes is wait. If the above person had simply waited a few minutes everything would have been OK. In the early days of computers, all we did was wait on our computers, but now computers are so fast that if a person has to wait a few seconds he thinks something is wrong. Before you do anything, wait five or ten minutes.

2) If after waiting, your computer is still running slowly, you should close down all of the programs that you are not using. A computer can only do so much at one time. Closing down programs that you are not using frees up resources so that your computer can run better.

3) Next, try pressing the three keys: Ctrl, Alt, Delete. This is often called the three finger salute. Only press them once and press them all at the same time, then wait. Eventually, the Windows Task Manager window will be displayed. This lists the applications and processes that are running. You can use this to close down more applications or processes that may be hogging resources. If you have viruses or spyware running in the background, they will usually be listed in the processes section and you can close them from there. Processes connected to running applications or Windows processes should not be closed down, but viruses and spyware should be closed.

When you close an application using End Task, it will inform the application and the application may respond with a message, like "Are you sure you want to quit". If you answer the message given by the application, End Task will quit closing it down, so if you want End Task to force close the application, do not answer the message given by the application. End Task will wait for ten seconds or so and then close the application.

4) Try closing Windows. Sometimes the only alternative to a frozen system is to restart Windows. Close Windows in the normal way.

5) It is dangerous to shut down the computer without first closing Windows, but if you can't get Windows to close, you may have to shut down your computer. This should only be done as a last resort. This can be done on most computers by holding the Power button in for five seconds.

I don't know how I ever did without broadband internet service. The amount of information I have access to is incredible. Any time, anywhere in my home, at the click of a button. I'm talking about downloading good quality Free video productions about science and nature, and several other categories, right on my computer. Free audio podcasts, and music, on my computer. I surf the web on my laptop from any room in my house. I recommend this freedom to anyone! So, how can you get broadband and even wireless internet connections in your house? It's easy, and you do not have to spend a fortune.

AOL has it's benefits, but one thing is for sure, it does not have SPEED. Any promise of faster AOL service is merely caching of frequently viewed pages, which simply means once a page has loaded AOL saves it for the next time you visit. This will make loading regular graphics and information faster, but new data and new advertisements will still take just as long, and it will not increase the download speed of video and audio content.

I lived with AOL for a few years and finally discovered how I could surf faster for even less money. I think AOL's basic rate is still around $20 or $25 per month. My broadband service, through Verizon, costs about $17 or $18 per month (after taxes and USF fee, keep reading) and is 10 times faster. I've timed it. In my area, using existing phone lines, I can download 6 or 7 mb (that 6 or 7,000,000 bytes) in about one minute. Which means it takes me about 5-7 minutes to download a 5 or 6 minute video production, or 2-3 minutes for a one hour audio only podcast.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I hate seeing people spend too much money on internet services that don't offer the speed and quality that is available elsewhere. AOL can continue to charge that higher rate because AOL customers are willing to pay it, mostly because they don't understand how it all works, and that something else available, faster and cheaper. AOL is convenient and has a lot of great features, all presented nicely in a simple interface. That's what you're paying for. But if you know where to go online (for example... GOOGLE.com) you can find all of the information and news you need with a simple search. Haven't you heard? Google rules!

Anyway, back to what I was talking about, wireless high speed internet for your computer. My wife and I decided to upgrade to Verizon DSL for $14.99 per month (with a one year contract, big deal), plus taxes and an additional fee (Universal Service Fund, a federal program that helps subsidize rural telephone service and provide Internet access to schools and libraries.) which brings it up to about $17 or $18. After weighing the options and benefits we thought it was worth it, and it has been. Check in your local area, I'm sure you can find a DSL service offering a similar plan, or check Verizon.

To take it one step further I installed a wireless router with ports for my old, ethernet-bound computers. Now my wife and I have 4 computer networked in our own home, and can take our laptops anywhere in the house, even outside in the back yard, and surf the web 10 times faster than we could before. Actually more than 10 times faster.

Average download speeds with our AOL service were around 4 to 5 KB per second (that's 4 or 5 thousand bytes ber second). Even if they advertised higher, the rate most home owners were likely to get was much less due to the quality of phone lines in their home and around town. Sometimes if the wind blew hard enough we'd notice a lag in our connectivity with AOL. I'm not kidding.

Now, for less than what our AOL service cost, we're downloading at speeds anywhere from 70,000 bytes to 90,000 bytes per second. That's about twenty times faster than before! The number advertised by Verizon for our DSL plan is 768kbps. Notice the small b, that's bits. That means 768,000 bits per second, which is (768 8) 96,000 Bytes per second. Of course, like dial up, DSL uses our phone lines so that rate will vary, but it will always be much faster than dial-up.

Sure we could have upgraded to cable broadband, but for that we would have had to upgrade our cable service (I'll explain in a minute) and pay about $40 per month on top of that for cable internet speeds.

Yes, highest cable internet speeds dwarf our DLS speeds but I ask you, does a microwave cook fast enough? I hear people complaining at work who have to wait 2 minutes for their food to heat up. Give me a break! Sure, faster is better, but at what cost? Patience is relative.

I mentioned upgrading our cable TV service. My wife and I don't watch too much TV, and we don't need the premium channels. We learned that "antenna service" is available from our local cable company for about $12 per month. They don't advertise that too loudly do they? Of course not, they want as many people as possible to pay $50 per month for full cable programming. I think it may even be more than that in some areas.

In order for us to get cable modem we would have to upgrade first to full cable, for $50 or so, then pay an additional $30 or so on top of that for cable modem. Let's see, right now we pay $12 plus, say, $18 for our TV and internet services, that's about $30 we spend each month for internet and TV. We have faster internet, and no extra channels we'll never watch. Cable service would cost us $80 to $90! I can't justify that expense.

Sure, when I visit my friend and connect to his wireless network with my laptop I can download stuff in the blink of an eye, maybe 10 mb (10,000,000) in the same amount of time it takes me to download 1 mb, and I get jealous. But we just can't afford that right now, that's why I'm sharing this with you.

If you would like to increase the speed at which you can access new information, new technology, videos, music and movies (yeah, I download movies sometimes - click download and walk away for a few hours, but I'm talking a FULL LENGTH MOVIE), but don't want to spend too much, I'm here to tell you that it is possible.

if you are willing to save money, get faster internet speeds, and recharge some dormant brain cells getting used to the new technology and services online, then you can cut loose from overpriced dial-up service and switch to broadband. It can be done.

Oh, and if you want to save money on TV, consider this... Check with your local cable provider about antenna service, pay under $20 per month for basic TV channels (clean picture), and download iTunes (Free) because you can download a lot of TV shows -- a growing collection from a number of networks -- for only $3 each. To tell you the truth, I'd rather pay $3 for a TV episode I want to see, than pay $40 per month for shows I'll never see.

And the future is here now! Consider Apple Computer, Inc, the wonderful company with a huge influence on society, and developer of iTunes, the software you can own for free to download music, podcasts, vidcasts, and those TV shows I told you about. Apple just released AppleTV, which will allow you to watch all of that iTunes content right on your television. Right now the unit runs about $300 (one time purchase price), but I guarantee you a year or two down the road, when you're ready to tackle it, the price will be more affordable.

I also mentioned that my wife and I have wireless internet right in our home. It is definitely affordable, and you don't need to be an IT specialist to hook it all up! It comes with instructions and a CD-ROM set-up disc that will walk you through it all. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

I bought a Wireless-G router from Linksys, but many brands are available. My father-in-law opted for the one that ships for a nominal fee (I think it may have even been free) with his Verizon DSL service. He can plug in 2 or 3 computers, plus multiple wireless laptop computers. He and my mother-in-law actually have two of the flat-screen iMacs that don't even have to plug into anything but the power outlet. They are connected wirelessly to the internet.

Bottom line... Don't be afraid of technology. Take your time, explore your options, and talk to someone who has done it. Anyone can enjoy the countless benefits of broadband internet service and a wireless network. Come on now, we're in the 21st century you know! Typical computer users in the healthcare sector contain confidential material such as patient records, accounting records, x-rays, diagnostic images and much more. To a data recovery expert they are nothing more than 0s and 1s organized on the computers hard disk drive and much easier to retrieve than one might think.

Data often thought irrevocably lost can be and is frequently retrieved by data recovery specialists. Likewise, data thought deleted from a system is often still resident on a discarded computers hard drive.

Data removal procedures go beyond the simple deletion of a file from the computer users desktop. There are methods and techniques that are used by individuals who come into possession of previously used systems who can reconstruct data even after the storage media has been erased.

What many users dont realize is that when most computers delete a file, the contents of the file are not actually removed: the file, at least in the short term, is still resident on the hard drive, but its no longer linked to the file system. The data remains on the disk until the operating system re-uses those sectors to write new data.

In order to confirm a deleted file is really deleted, it is necessary to overwrite the data sectors of that file. Until the old data is actually overwritten by new information it can be recovered by programs that read disk sectors directly, such as forensic software, commercially available data retrieval software or data recovery techniques. As result, data thought to be deleted may remain on the drive if the sectors are not overwritten.

There are a number of ways to ensure the destruction or inaccessibility of data on hard drives: degaussing, overwriting, data encryption and media destruction are some of the methods that have been employed to safeguard against disclosure of sensitive information.

Wiping

The wiping of sensitive data from a computers hard drive or a removable storage device is the best method of data destruction to guarantee the data cant be reconstructed through laboratory techniques. Wiping is essential when hardware containing sensitive data is moved from a secure facility to a non-secure facility or environment. Degaussing

Clearing is feasible when the storage media is reused within the same computer and same office. For example, if the computer is simply being cleaned up for a new staff member taking over from a departing staff member, it is remaining in the same controlled environment.

Clearing can be accomplished by overwriting the unassigned system storage space on the disk. A single overwrite of a file or all system storage is usually enough to make sure that previous information cannot be rebuilt.

As mentioned earlier, simply deleting a file only removes the directory pointers to the file; the digital information is still on the computer until overwritten. Even reformatting, or repartitioning a hard drive is not enough to guaranteed that the files are completely gone, even if the end user cant browse them or open them with an application.

Ultimate destruction

In extreme cases where the destruction of data must be guaranteed and the chance of retrieval must be eliminated, physical destruction of the hardware is the best course of action. Media may generally be destroyed by using a number of methods, including an abrasive substance on magnetic disk or drum recording surface. Corrosive chemicals can have the same desired effect, but regardless, the entire recording surface must be completely removed before disposal. Destruction of drive (or the entire computer, for that matter) can also be achieved by being smelted, disintegrated or incinerated at a metal destruction facility or through incineration. Even if the decision is made to destroy the hardware completely, it is still a good idea to purge media before submitting it for destruction.

Hold on a second!

While making sure sensitive data does not fall into the rights should be established policy, it is important to make sure that data is no longer needed; if it is, make sure it can be found on another computer or server.

Before disposing of any computer hardware, be sure to back up the data in a secure location. Just because the computer is no longer needed, doesnt mean the data isnt still required, and that data may not be found anywhere else in the organization. There could also be legal requirements for maintaining certain information, including medical records long after the patient has left the facility

Ultimately, however, the safeguarding of protected health information is critical and properly removing this sensitive information from computer hard drives must be incorporated within any other security and privacy policies and processes.

This might give us unlimited Intel into the plans of international terrorists before they strike. Basically we are putting them into a box, a communication box if you will. They believe they are talking with the outside world, but in reality they are only talking with a virtual-reality game. They may still have local interaction with a few people, but all their other communication would be done through artificial intelligence supercomputers.

Even if they were to discover, or suspect that this was happening, we still already have all the human intelligence that was freely given out prior to their knowledge of what was going on. If we suspected that they suspected that they had been put into a communication box. Then it would be wise to open up the floodgates a little bit and allow more personal communication to come through, until their fears subsided.

This way they could not know what is real and what is not and by doing this you gain the psychological advantage over the target. The plan could easily be implemented and tried out. The manipulation and control of human beings using such techniques is not as far-fetched as you might think. This is because international terrorists all are already very limited in the number of people they associate with.

Not terribly long ago, I wrote that anyone considering the purchase of a new computer should 'Stay calm despite tempting computer prices.' The revolution that took about six years to develop was underway at the time and newer technologies revolutionized the guts of PC's we can buy in the stores.

Break time is over. Capable 64-bit applications, processors and Operating Systems (OS's) are now mingling on store shelves with the old, standard 32-bit applications. SDRAM was stamped out by DDR RAM that fathered DDR2 and DDR3. Graphics hardware has become a branch of processor science all to itself. Single core processor motherboards share the market with dual-core processors and dual processor motherboards. Add to all that clutter on the market the impending release of the World's largest software maker's newest OS due out shortly and you get panic at purchase time.

With the idea of a computer purchase between 'now' and mid-2007, here's what's best for us... We'll need either a 3Ghz single core processor or a dual-core processor that's 2Ghz or better if we can't get a computer with TWO processors. We can even explore purchasing a 64-bit OS for any 64-bit processor scheme that we like provided the letters X and P don't show up together in the OS title.

Getting DDR2 RAM (the computer's short-term memory) where one stick provides a minimum of 512MB is great insurance against being left behind by a faster future. The DDR2 prefix means that it won't soon be phased out, but will get old enough soon to drop in price when it comes time to purchase another 512MB or even 1GIG stick to increase performance. Keep your eyes sharp on the Specification sheets and know that 'dual channel' DDR RAM is okay too.

Your love of graphics may not extend beyond the picture you have on your personalized desktop, but pay heed! "Shared RAM" was one of the best ideas ever, but is now so completely backward and obsolete that it's a term to avoid at any cost. That cost is quite real in many cases; high-end graphic cards sometimes have better RAM (DDR3) than the Motherboard. A Pentium 4 with a 745 chipset will not deliver the computational speed that the same Pentium 4 with a 925 chipset would. This difference can create a $100 jump that's worth it in the long run. The tendon of these extensor muscles connects to the lateral epicondyle of the upper arm bone called the humerus.

When the muscles are overused or exposed to a force they can not withstand the tendon will become damaged. The damaged tendon will then become inflamed and cause soreness and/or pain in the lateral elbow area.

□ racquet grip is too large for the player

Step 2: Find the muscle that is attached to the damaged tendon (extensor muscles). It is located on the outside of the forearm just above the bone and is seen in the diagram above. (NEVER PRESS or MASSAGE the INJURED TENDON)

Step 3: Massage the extensor muscles (not the tendon) attached to the damaged tendon. Massaging the muscle will cause it to relax and release pressure off of the tendon.

Step 4: Place an Ice Pack (bag of frozen peas, ziploc bag of ice with a little water added / double bag it) on the injured tendon area. Cut off an old shirt sleeve and slide it onto your elbow between the skin and ice pack to avoid frost damage. Elevating your elbow above the heart will help reduce inflammation. Keep the ice pack on the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes up to 3 times a day if possible. Even one time a day will help. Allow at least 2 hour between each icing.

The goal is to relieve the pressure on the muscle and reduce the inflammation which will allow the healing process to run its course.

Other options:

□ Ibuprofen will also help reduce inflammation and reduce pain but it is not a good idea to take large consistent dosages. Use Ibuprofen only to aid other treatments.

□ Your doctor may recommend ultra-sound therapy. Ultra-sound therapy uses painless high frequency sound waves applied to the skin to improve blood flow in the area and speed up the healing process.

□ If the treatments above do not work you can ask your doctor about Cortisone shots. Cortisone is a more powerful anti-inflammatory. Three shots would be the maximum you would probably need if it came to this. That will give you a few months of relief to allow the healing process to run its course.

□ Last resort is surgery. Surgery for this type of injury is usually not necessary. About 95% of people with Tennis Elbow recover without surgery. Miriam Weiss: Holocaust Survivor and Kibbutz Mother

Miriam Weiss: June 29, 1915 - January 4, 1997

On that precious list of "Righteous Gentiles" (rare individuals who assisted Jews during the Holocaust) is the great name of Jan Bulski who risked his life and family in Poland to save my "kibbutz mother" -- Miriam Weiss -- who I met and was "adopted" by at Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan near Haifa in Northern Israel while a volunteer there from October 1982 to February 1983.

This is an excerpt from my "Life is a Trek" blog article "Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan, Restal Hotel, Tiberias, "Israel -- a letter I wrote an American friend (without touching it up for spelling), July 27, 1989 from Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan, Israel:

"Miriam & I cried yesterday when she received a letter stating the man in Poland who hid her & saved her from the Gestapo & Holocaust, died. She opened up last week & told me what I hadn't known & how wealthy she was raised, how wealthy she married w/jewellery & furs & extensive rich contacts & travel in Europe & how happy she was, and had a cook for her & her husband & a maid also, & how after Hitler invaded Poland her husband immediately joined the underground buying weapons & insisting she move in w/friends for safety sake & how he was later captured by the Gestapo & murdered in Matthausen, Austria concentration camp & how sick w/grief & pain she was, she so loved him. And how one of the women who risked their lives to help save her later was caught attempting to save others & was murdered herself after being shipped to Ravensbruck concentration camp & how her mother was in the Warsaw Ghetto & sent to the gas chambers in Treblinka concentration camp. She cried when she spoke of how much pain can one take after her husband's death. Miriam just turned 74 about a month ago. I don't know how they handle such hell... She's been ill for the last 2 months & I feel helpless to help her..."

While writing this article to honor Miriam's memory and share history, I've practically gone mad looking for the fuchshia-colored paper I knew I had with her maiden name and the name of her Catholic Polish husband, a Gentile, one of four brothers who each owned the largest industrial banks in Poland, a paper I typed up in her home the day after she gave me detailed information about her life. I can't find it and wonder if I threw it out figuring Yad Vashem already has the information or what, but I can't imagine doing that as I would want to add my personal touch and memories to it. Perhaps it's all symbolic of the fears and frustrations of looking for lost family members, Holocaust survivors, and it's out of your control and so overwhelming.

Miriam said when Heydrich (Himmler?) thought things were going too slowly in Poland, he decided to round up a lot of people on "Black Saturday." That's when they took her husband away since he was involved in the Polish Underground. Miriam said she was in the Warsaw Ghetto with her mother (Miriam's parents were Zwi and Hana Hampel) but got out and was hid by a woman who was later sent to Ravensbruck herself for helping to rescue Jews. One night some drunk Poles came and banged on the door and told the woman they knew she was hiding "schwein, Jewish schwein," pretending to be Gestapo, and only left when they got a fur out of it. That's when the lady told Miriam she would have to go back into the Warsaw Ghetto until some other place could be found for her.

Miriam said that she had dyed her hair blond to look as Aryan as could be and wore a widow's veil and that the Nazi guards at the Warsaw Ghetto made a comment about how young she was to already be a widow. Later when another place was found for Miriam, she said her mother was so happy for her to get out but it was the last time she saw her and Miriam attributes her survival to her mother's prayers. Miriam said her mother was sent to Treblinka where she died, but a letter from Henia Seidman [Miriam's best Israeli-Polish friend] to me says she died in the Warsaw Ghetto. Miriam also said, if I remember correctly, that she was hid in a hole in the ground at Jan Bulski's place, and that the only thing to comfort her was a small vial of perfume she kept. I always gave her a gift of perfume for Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles). Henia wrote Miriam was hidden in their kitchen. One thing for sure is Miriam said after the war everybody talked about where they were during the war and how hardly anybody could believe where she was hidden, as Jews weren't welcome there before the war! Miriam felt the Poles were more anti-Semitic than the Germans.

Miriam told me that she later arranged, after the Russians came, to make it to Berlin but you could never know for sure if the one you paid to help you get there would show up or come through and her help did, but she ended up in the Russian section of Berlin on Christmas Eve and was in a small room with no windows and mattresses on the floor with about 50 other people crammed in there. She said everybody hoped to get into the American quarter. She also said after the war there was so much food, almost too much food.

Miriam married someone I think she met that Christmas night in Berlin or knew him in Poland, Hanoch Eisenberg, and wandered with him in Europe and as Henia wrote, "the Joint brought her and her husband...to Italy. From Italy they went by ships to Israel, but in the time of English Mandate their ship was kidnapped and brought to Cyprus camps. In Cyprus they were perhaps a year and in 1949 they came to Ramat Jochanan."

Actually, Miriam had some friend or relative visiting Ramat Yohanan from Kibbutz Yagur who was reading a letter from her, as Miriam told me, and she started crying and Henia Seidman, being the soft-hearted woman she's known to be, asked her why and she told her how Miriam was so depressed in Cyprus and Henia said for her to tell her to plan to come to Ramat Yohanan. When Miriam first came to the kibbutz from Cyprus after Israeli independence, they called for Henia who was working in what was then the kitchen (not the big beautiful cheder ochel -- dining room -- they have today, she pointed out), practically a wooden shack, and although she had soot or something on her face her beautiful blue eyes shone through (and Henia had such beautiful blue eyes) and Henia and her mother hugged and welcomed Miriam as family. Henia's family left Poland before the Holocaust.

Miriam divorced Eisenberg who didn't want to stay on the kibbutz and moved to Tel Aviv. She later married - for one day - David Weiss from the kibbutz. I used to say hello to him and often saw him working at the kibbutz factory, Palram. A very short man, older, with white hair. I once ate with David and mentioned the Queen of England continued King David's dynasty, and was surprised he was familiar with the belief but appeared to dismiss it as "a nice story."

Miriam and Henia were both short Polish Jews. We would always sit together in the dining room and eat and they would carry on in Polish and some Hebrew and English. If you didn't know them you would think they were always arguing, but that's just how they talked, as I chuckle remembering them. The mail boxes were in the dining room too, and since it was easier for me to walk with my "long legs" and get Miriam's mail, I would. That's how I brought the letter to her that day when we found out Jan Bulski had died. I had only written him about once and sent him maybe $20 or more through some grateful Polish organization in Toledo, Ohio that would make sure he received it. They said it would be exchanged on the black market for more zlotys. He was a diabetic and did receive something monthly from Yad Vashem after Miriam and Henia saw to it. A tree was also planted in his honor on the "Avenue of the Righteous Gentiles" at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Miriam cried and said he didn't have to risk his life and the life of his family to save her but that he did and that he was such a good man. Henia and I just kept quiet and wept with her.

Miriam told me her family had their money from the tea industry. They bought and sold the famous Lyon tea from England and then repackaged it or whatever they did to make a profit. She loved the European concerts and later travelled with her husband all over Europe and North Africa. She said her love of music came from her mother.

Miriam had another kibbutz "son" like me, also an American, whose name is Joe from New Hampshire. She was going to leave him her photo-album. Joe travelled with her to Switzerland to visit a mutual friend whom Miriam tried to play matchmaker between him and her, but they remained friends and nothing more. Miriam used to ask why Moses couldn't have led the Children of Israel to Switzerland! People would speak of Miriam's sons as "Joe and Hoover." (I was born with the family name of Hoover but legally changed my name to David Ben-Ariel for religious reasons). Miriam used to exclaim, "Do you know how many people would love to have your passport? To be an American?" I would tell her that although I dearly love the United States I want to live in Israel and she would mellow and say something like, "Well, if that makes you happy, if that's what you want." She also worried that I would get killed like Meir Kahane for being so outspoken.

One of my many fond and funny memories is Miriam and I arriving somewhat late to a Sukkot celebration around the swimming pool at Ramat Yohanan, and there were plenty of people standing around and we looked for a place to stand and then she found a bale of straw to sit on near the front and then there appeared to be some confusion as the lady who was to lead the children's singing was frantically looking about and then discovered that Miriam was sitting on the folded banner that had the words to their song!

Miriam used to rest in bed after we ate in the afternoon and listen to her classical music (I gave her Grandma Vivian Hoover's classical albums) and read The Jerusalem Post and then sigh how she hated politics, comment that she was weary of world news, but she would continue to read the newspapers and listen every hour on the hour to the news on the radio as I read a book or wrote in her living room (where she displayed the Austrian crystal glass castle I once gave her for a gift, which I called "the Kingdom of Messiah" -- because of its brilliance -- and Joe's paintings adorned her walls...Miriam had an artist and an author for her sons).

Every time I visited Israel, I would head straight for Miriam's. The last time I saw her was in 1995 when her friends told me she had Alzheimer's. She had been moved from her apartment to the nursing home. They told me if she would remember anybody, it would be me. I went in and she was strapped in a wheelchair, wanting out, and wanting me to get her out and speaking German to me. (Miriam knew German, English, Polish and Hebrew). She held on to my arm so tightly, looking frightened, and I said, "Miriam, it's David. I'm American. Speak Hebrew or English. I don't know German." She was crying and I was crying. Another Miriam, originally from Berlin, was very angry about Miriam's deteriorating situation and said the Germans who doubted the Holocaust should hear Miriam reliving it and crying out for her mother, as if once wasn't enough! Henia wrote me that Miriam was born in Poland June 29, 1915 and died January 4, 1997 at Ramat Yohanan and was buried there and "got a very fine monument at our cemetery."

For greater insight into my beloved Miriam, I'll close with portions of a March 18, 1988 letter of commendation she wrote on my behalf to Joseph Tkach, Jr. of the Worldwide Church of God:

...my kibbutz son David Hoover...first came to our kibbutz seven years ago...he posted [actually somebody else did in the communal dining room] an article he had written about his struggle to free himself from drugs for all the members to read. A very brave thing to do since drug addiction is here considered a terrible social and personal crime. I invited him to visit me and we subsequently got to know each other well. David stayed on our kibbutz six months the first time. He worked hard and thus earned the respect of many members here. There was never any trouble. Quite the contrary. And David shared with us his Christian beliefs that had given him such strength to overcome his addiction...When I say he shared his beliefs I mean that he offered but did not force them upon us. As might be well known to you we are sensitive to any aggressive presentations of Christianity that denigrate our Jewish heritage. But David has a deep and affectionate respect for it. I myself am not religious and must admit that I am sometimes bewildered by his impressive knowledge of the Bible and Jewish customs but if it give his life fulfillment I am very happy for him...Over the past seven years David has come to Ramat Yohanan to celebrate Sukkot. He has stayed with me and is a very well behaved guest. He also corresponds with me regularly and started my subscription to Plain Truth which I do read with interest. Recently I continued the subscription. I might add that several other members of our kibbutz now read it too...I think confidence can be placed in him to represent your church here in the Middle East...

When You're Not Happy After A Baby - Seek Help

Many times we place pressure on ourselves to be superwoman - to overcome every obstacle single-handedly, and with a smile. The person we hurt most by doing so is ourself. For some women, admitting we are experiencing postpartum stress or a form of depression after welcoming our newborn child into our lives is similar to admitting we have failed. In fact, by not admitting we need help, we will fail. Our marriages may end, our self-confidence will wane, and happiness will elude us.

Six months after my twin daughters were born, I realized I was miserable. Although I beamed whenever I was holding one of my daughters, my tone toward my husband was mean. I didn't know why I was so horrible to him. A lot had happened to us and to our marriage over a two year period, but our challenges had been overcome. So why was I still angry?

It had all started when my husband, Dave, and I were informed he was infertile. Based on his medical condition we had three options: 1) in vitro fertilization (IVF), 2) adoption, or 3) childfree living. Dave and I chose IVF as our first attempt to become parents. Our infertility diagnosis was difficult for me to accept and it was challenging to our marriage. In order to manage the sadness of our situation, I sought therapy. During a counseling session, my therapist mentioned that women diagnosed with infertility can experience depression similar to women who are diagnosed with cancer. Initially I didn't believe being infertile could be compared to someone experiencing a potentially deadly disease, but according to one online source "women trying to conceive often have clinical depression rates similar to women diagnosed with heart disease or cancer." [i]

My husband and I were lucky enough to become pregnant during our IVF treatment. We were expecting twins and life resembled the happy state we enjoyed prior to our infertility. But when I twenty-four weeks pregnant, I was admitted into the hospital for preterm labor. I was placed on Magnesium Sulfate, which is a muscle relaxant, to stop my contractions.

At thirty weeks' gestation, my water broke. My twin daughters were born weighing two and one-half pounds each and they had to be placed on life saving medical equipment. Even though I finally had the opportunity to embrace and enjoy motherhood, I was nonetheless full of anger. There was really no explanation for my emotions since I had what I wanted. I was a mother and we were a family.

I couldn't put my finger on a single reason why I so angry because in truth it was a number of things. I was frustrated that we had to resort to medical treatments to become pregnant. I was mad at myself because I had failed to carry my babies full term. I was sure I had done something wrong during my pregnancy to cause their early birth.

Depression is an interesting phenomenon. When we are depressed we use words like sadness, anger, and emptiness to express our emotions. It's hard to distinguish exactly when depression begins and ends because it's not instantaneous. My moods would come and go with the events and circumstances of each day or week.

I didn't use the word "depression" or any of its forms until I was ready to admit I was depressed. My denial prevented me from making positive progress in my relationships or in being happy. At the time, I believed I should have been able to handle the events in my life and my emotions on my own. Truly, I didn't recognize my state of mind. The depression colored the way I interacted with people.

One of my daughter's nurses had mentioned I should seek the assistance of medical therapies to help me "take the edge off." I resented her implication that I needed an anti-depressant because in my mind I was not depressed. It took me five months after the birth of my daughters to admit something was wrong with me. I realized the happy person I used to be was gone and I wanted her back. Therapy sessions were not helping me enough; I needed something else.

Embarrassed as I was to ask a doctor for anti-depressants, I was more humiliated about the person I had become. After one day on the medication I noticed my voice was softer and my mood was lighter. According to my physician, it would take a couple of weeks for me to notice the medication working, but I think my heart was ready so the effect seemed immediate.

After eleven months on the anti-depressants I noticed I was very happy and laughed easily. At this point, I decided it was time to wean from the medication to see how I would do. I started by reducing the dosage by one-half for two months. My physician told me that if you wean too fast, it could make you ill. On a one-week out-of-town trip, I forgot my medication and opted to see how I would do without it. I've been medication-free ever since.

I am not necessarily advocating anti-depressants, but I am suggesting women consider seeking some form of help, whether it's counseling, acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, Reiki, or any other appropriate outlet. Once I admitted there was greater depth in my anger than a couple of bad days, I took action. I was tired of being angry. I longed to get along with my husband again. If that meant I needed to take medication for thirteen months to help take the edge off, then so be it. When I realized I no longer needed medical assistance, I discontinued the medication. I made that decision - my doctor didn't make it for me.

I have noticed I do still have a much rougher and harder edge than I had before all of these events, but I am now able to manage those edges on my own. I am now aware of when I am feeling on edge and I have the tools I need to deal with those moods. I do this not only for my benefit, but for those around me. On the other hand, I have also noticed a softer, more emotional aspect to my individuality. At first I was not sure I liked the softer, more vulnerable me, but I have decided that it's a welcome addition to the person I have become.
